a sociedade judaica, quem ti nha os cinco pães e os dois pei xi nh os. Além di ss o, os famintos
formavam uma multidão de cinco mil homens. Mas foi desta condição pobre e precária
que veio a solução para saciar a fome daquelas pessoas.
O processo de cultivo das lavouras era pesado e exigia grande esforço, o que
contribuía para a diminuição da expectativa de vida das pessoas. Nesta empreit ada, era de
grande valia o uso da força animal para virar a terra antes do plantio e transportar o
produto das colheitas. Em alguns casos, os animais serviam também para fazer a debulha
de c er ea is como a cevada e de leguminosas como a lentilha ou ervilha, pois os cachos ou
vagens secas, quando pisados pelos casco s, se abriam e soltavam os grãos. Contudo, ainda
restava o trabalho pesado d e capina (Mt 13,29; Mc 13,16), que tinha duas finalidades
básicas: extirpar as ervas-dani nha s e afofar a terra, permitindo que os retíc ul os presentes
nas raízes dos cereais se aprofundassem no solo e extraíssem mais nutri e nt e s para a planta,
aumentando a produtividade.
Quando os campos estavam madu ros era hora de meter a f oi ce (Dt 16,9; Mc 4,29),
depois se deixava o cereal c ort ado secar ao sol uns dois ou trê s dias. Durante este t e mpo, os
cachos não podiam encostar no solo, poi s umedeciam e as sementes apodreciam; eles
deviam ficar suspensos do chão na própria palha do cereal. Passado este te m po, o produto
era rec olh id o e amarrado em feixes (Sl 126,6; Mt 13,30) e levado para a eira, onde e ra
debulhado pelo pisoteio de um animal ou por um bastão de madeira.
Em termos de composição do grão, a cevada é mais pobre que o trigo, porque
contém menos glúten, elemento responsável pela liga da massa e pela coloração
esbranquiçada da far in ha. Isto explica o valor comercial da c e vada ser inferior ao do trigo.
Além do pão, os grãos da cevada eram consumidos in natura torrados e serviam de
alimento para os animais, assim como a palha (
קַשׁ
).
Contudo, é importante que se di g a que os grãos da cevada e do trigo só podem ser
ingeridos por animais ruminant e s, isto é, por bois, cabras, búfalos, cam e los, ovelhas,
veados, etc. Os animais não-ruminantes ou monogástricos como cavalos, coelhos, jumentos,
zebras, etc. não podem ingerir cereais in natura, pois eles contêm grande quantidade de
fibra, que não é processada pelo organismo, podendo intoxicar e levar à morte em poucas
horas. A cevada também era usada para a produção de cerveja (Jz 13,7; Is 29,9).
Estima-se que a produção média da cevada nos solos israelenses chegava a 1:5

Traduzindo e s t e valor para os pesos agrícolas atuais, significa que a cada saca de 60kg de
semente plantada colhiam-se 5 sacas de grãos de 60kg. Para se ter u ma ideia, atualmente,
segundo o relatório de acompanhame nt o da safra 2019/2020, produzido pela Companhia
Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab), o estado do Paraná é o maior produtor brasileiro do
